Cayenne Pepper, also known as a Capsicum, is a stimulating herb which comes from the dried pods of chili peppers and is used as a spice for many different types of cooking and has been used medicinally for thousand of years. The Aztecs referred to this wonderful herb as Chili. The medicinal properties of Cayenne Pepper come from the chemical or capsaicin and it is the ingredient which gives this herb it's HEAT. Peppers are measured according to heat units and the amount of heat is determined by how hot the pepper is, which will determine the amount of capsaicin. A pepper's capsaicin content range is from 0-1.5 %. Cayenne Pepper is known for relieving pain and poor circulation. When taken internally, Cayenne Pepper will treat poor digestion and gas. It is also very healing for the heart and circulatory system. Green Cauldron uses Cayenne Pepper in our Therapeutic Herbal Joint & Muscle Cream and Lightweight Soothing Joint Lotion. CINNAMON (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)--The essential oil comes from the leaves of a Cinnamon tree, an evergreen which produces small, yellow-white clusters of flowers in the summer and afterwards oval purple berries. The aroma is very strong and has a peppery, earthy, spicy and slightly woodsy fragrance.Although available throughout the year, the fragrant, sweet and warm taste of Cinnamon is a perfect spice to use during the winter months.Cinnamon is one of the oldest spices known and was used in ancient Egypt not only as a flavoring for beverages but also for medicines, but also as an embalming agent. This wonderful herb was found in one of the earliest books on Chinese botanical medicine, dated around 2,700 B.C.Today, we use the essential oil for many ailments including constipation, exhaustion, lice, low blood pressure, rheumatism, scabies and stress.Current research shows that by simply smelling the wonderful odor of this sweet spice boosts brain activity! In traditional Chinese Medicine, Cinnamon is used for its warming qualities and for relief with a cold and the flu.
Cinnamon has a long history both as a spice and as a medicine. The brown bark of the tree when dried, rolls up into a tubular form and is known as a quill or cinnamon stick as we know it.This form can also be grown up into the powder form and used in teas and favoring for all kinds of dishes. It should be noted that when used in the essential oil form, Cinnamon is considered to be a dermal toxin and can be irritating and sensitizing to the skin and should be used sparingly.
