Herb of the Month
ROSEMARY
Rosmarinus

This featured herb has been around and used for a very long time. Used for headaches and intestinal remedies, Rosemary has a very strong, bright fragrance which was also used in French hospitals by burning Juniper berries with Rosemary to correct poor air quality and to prevent infection. Additionally, in the French language, Rosemary flowers represent the power of rekindling lost energy.
Shakespeare has Ophelia in Hamlet say, "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember!" Act IV, Scene 5. He also mentions how the English once place Rosemary in coffins and around graves in Romeo and Juliet when Father Lawrence says, "Dry up your tears, and stick your Rosemary On this fair [corpse]."
Rosemary is believed to strengthen memory, thereby making it the emblem of remembrance and fidelity as well as an old wedding custom in many parts of Europe.
The botanical name for Rosemary, Rosmarinus, is derived from Latin, meaning 'dew of the sea', a reference to its pale blue dew-like flowers and is often found growing near the sea. Rosemary has branchy wooden stems with linear leaves that are green on top and white underneath. Rosemary will grow as large as 3 to 5 feet tall.
There is an old, romantic legend from the 14th century in which 72-year-old Queen Elizabeth of Hungary used Rosemary for her rheumatism and gout. This potion of Rosemary and lavender so enhanced her health and beauty that it caught the attention of the 26-year-old King of Poland, who asked for her hand in marriage. The potion became known as "Hungary Water" and was the beauty aide of choice for women for hundreds of years.
All of these wonderful stories hold true to this useful herb and don't forget using Rosemary in may delicious culinary dishes, such as lamb or stew. Green Cauldron uses Rosemary, when not using it in our cooking, in many of our products such as the following:
Joint & Muscle Cream Scalp Treatment
